In response to growing pressure for corporations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations and their supply and distribution chains, about 90% of the companies in the S&P 500 now issue some form of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report. The authors of this article, including Driving Corporate Performance cochair Robert S. Kaplan, propose that the current standards for these reports do not actually hold companies accountable to share the full story of their environmental impact. As a remedy, the authors offer a more targeted and auditable way to tackle ESG reporting: the E-liability accounting system.
